カシオ電子辞書EX-wordにある「趣味の項目」中、世界文学１０００作品の中に入っている
アンデルセン童話です。
平成２７年（２０１５）３月４日（水）読み始め、
その日の中に読み終わった。
いつの時代でもお金持ちは嫁さんをもらうと言う事は大変なことだと感じた。
騙されないように思っても、だまされるのだ。
信じて結婚し、そして一生涯、ダマされた事に気付かず済むことが
最高の幸せと、この童話を読んで思った。
学校を卒業した２３歳で結婚し、貧乏で式も挙げていない私には関係ない事だが。
この物語の出だし
There was once a Prince who wished to marry a Princess; but then she must be a
real Princess. He travelled all over the world in hopes of finding such a
lady; but there was always something wrong. Princesses he found in plenty; but
whether they were real Princesses it was impossible for him to decide, for now
one thing, now another, seemed to him not quite right about the ladies. At
last he returned to his palace quite cast down, because he wished so much to
have a real Princess for his wife.
昔々ある所に本当の王女様と結婚したい王子様がいました。
王子様は本当のお姫様をさがす為に世界中を旅しました。
しかし、多くのお姫様が見つかったが本当のお姫様かどうか、
王子様には分からず、王子様には決めることができませんでした。
そして、ついに王子様は国の宮殿に戻りましたが、
王子様は彼の妻になる本当のお姫様をとても望んでいました。
まあ、私が読んで頭に描いた日本語はこんなもんです。
もっとうまく出来たら、小説家になっています。
One evening a fearful tempest arose, it thundered and lightened, and the rain
poured down from the sky in torrents: besides, it was as dark as pitch. All at
once there was heard a violent knocking at the door, and the old King, the
Prince's father, went out himself to open it.
雷鳴、雷光が轟き、アスファルトのような真黒な空からは激流のような大雨がたたきつけている、恐ろしい大嵐が起こったある晩の事、 ドアを激しくノックする音が聞こえた、王子様の年とったお父様である王自身がドアに行きそしてドアを開けた。
この場面を読みながら、思い出した事があった。
それは、２０年前に読み、聞いた SIDNEY SHELDON MASTER OF THE GAME 「１」の冒頭部分だ。
"By Good, this is a real thunder storm!" Jamie McGregor said. He had grown up amid the wild storms of Scottish Highlands, but he had never witnessed anything as violent as this.
The afternoon sky had been suddenly filled with enormos clouds of sand, turning day into night.
The sky was lit by flashes of lightning, followed by thunder. Sheets of rain of samashed against tents and tin huts and turned the dirt streets of klipdrift into mud.------
その「５」には, pitch black が出てくる。
Five minutes later, Kate and Banda were safely inside the pribate railway car.
It was pitch black.
英語の表現で、
アスファルトのような真黒とか、シーツを広げたような土砂降りとか、日本語ではあまり使わない描写が印象に残っている。
本題の読後感想に入ろう。
嵐の夜にわざわざお姫様がお城の門をたたくなんて、そしてその門を王様が自分自身で開けに行くなんて、考えられな～い、と、思う６５歳のじじいですが、話しを続けます。
It was a Princess who was standing outside the door. What with the rain and
the wind, she was in a sad condition; the water trickled down from her hair,
and her clothes clung to her body. She said she was a real Princess.
ドアの外に立っていたのは王女様だった。
外は雨、風の強く王女様は嘆かわしい状態であった。
髪からは水が滴り落ち、服は王女様の体にぴったりまとわりついていた。
そして言った。
私は本当の王女だと。
"Ah! we shall soon see that!" thought the old Queen-mother; however, she said
not a word of what she was going to do; but went quietly into the bedroom,
took all the bed-clothes off the bed, and put three little peas on the
bedstead. She then laid twenty mattresses one upon another over the three
peas, and put twenty feather beds over the mattresses.
Upon this bed the Princess was to pass the night.
年とった女王様はこれこそ本当の王女様だと思った。
しかし、そうでない場合もあると、女王は静かにベットルームに入った。
ベッドにかけていた物を全て取り払い、小さなエンドウの豆を３粒ベッドの上に置いた。
それから小さなエンドウ豆の上に２０枚のマットレスを敷き、さらに２０枚の羽毛布団をその上に被せた。
そのベッドに王女様は一晩過ごすことになりました。
The next morning she was asked how she had slept. "Oh, very badly indeed!" she
replied. "I have scarcely closed my eyes the whole night through. I do not
know what was in my bed, but I had something hard under me, and am all over
black and blue. It has hurt me so much!"
その翌朝、王妃は王女様に尋ねました。よく眠れましたかと。
王女様は答えました。
「本当にひどかった」
「一晩中目を閉じることが出来なかったです。ベッドの中に何か固いものがあって、体中が黒や青のあざだらけになりましたわ。本当に辛かったです。」
Now it was plain that the lady must be a real Princess, since she had been
able to feel the three little peas through the twenty mattresses and twenty
feather beds. None but a real Princess could have had such a delicate sense of
feeling.
彼女が来た時から、本当のお姫様に違いないと思っていたわ。
２０枚のマットレスと、２０枚の羽毛布団を通して、小さな３粒のエンドウ豆を感じることが出来るなんて。それは本当の姫にしか出来ないわ。
The Prince accordingly made her his wife; being now convinced that he had
found a real Princess. The three peas were however put into the cabinet of
curiosities, where they are still to be seen, provided they are not lost.
Wasn't this a lady of real delicacy?
王子様は彼女を妻に迎えた。
本当の王女様を見つけたと。
３粒の豆は骨董品のように大事なものを入れる箱に納められました。
その豆が失われないように、そしていつでも見られるように。
このお姫様は本当に繊細だったんでしょうかね？
こんな繊細な妻をめとったら、夫は生きるのが大変だろうなと・・・・私は思った。
グータラできへんやんか！
